A few years after I got my novice license(WN4JFS) I was on an overnight cycling trip when I pulled a book out of my host’s book case, over the bed. It was the biography of Charles Proteus Steinmetz (on the right – the guy on the left – well – you know him too – first name – Albert! They were contemporaries!).
That night, even though I was exhausted from covering 100 miles in the mountains of North Alabama, I read it from cover to cover.
Steinmetz was the genius behind General Electric. A cigar smoking, German hunchback! Unfortunately his contribution to our understanding of the world of electricity is, for the most part, long forgotten. His politics (left wing to say the least) got in the way of his legacy.
If you have any interest in the technologies, intellect in the extreme, curiosity without bounds and why immigration is so important to this country … you must read his story!
